Judo means different things to different people. It can be a fun sport, an art, a discipline, a recreational or social activity, a fitness program, a method of self-defense or combat, and even a way of life. It encompasses all of these and more.

Originating from the fighting techniques of feudal Japan, Kodokan Judo was founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano. Judo is a refined version of the ancient martial art of Jujutsu. Dr. Kano, President of the University of Education in Tokyo, studied these traditional forms and integrated what he considered the best techniques into the modern sport of Judo.

Judo was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1964 and is now practiced by millions around the world. People train in Judo to compete, stay in shape, build self-confidence, and for many other reasons. But above all, people practice Judo because it’s fun.

The belt and ranking system in Judo is similar to that of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and for good reason. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu originated from Judo in the early 20th century when Judo expert Mitsuyo Maeda moved to Brazil. He taught Judo to the Gracie family, whose practice would evolve into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Because of this connection, the ranking systems in both Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are quite similar.
